How to measure

Whatever you're having made, this page walks you through it. Fill in your numbers as you go — this page remembers them, and you can send them straight to a custom order when you're done.

You need

A fabric tape measure
Ten to twenty minutes
A friend, ideally. Most of these can be self-taken, but it's faster with help

Three rules

Tape flat against the body — snug enough not to droop, never tight enough to restrict
Round to the nearest quarter inch (42.25)
Add no wiggle room. These are skin measurements. We add the ease for your chosen fit

Neck

Measure around the neck at the height a buttoned collar would sit — below the Adam's apple, above the sternal notch. The tape should touch the skin comfortably, with enough room that you do not feel restricted.

Full chest

Measure around the chest at its fullest part — typically just under the armpits, across the shoulder blades and the nipples. Snug enough that the tape does not slip down, not so tight it restricts breathing. Keep the tape horizontal, arms by your side, take a normal breath. Do not puff your chest out. Double-check this one.

Full shoulder width

Measure from the end of the right shoulder to the end of the left. The "end of the shoulder" is where the horizontal plane of the shoulder meets the vertical plane of the arm. Double-check this one.

Right sleeve

Measure from the end of the right shoulder to the "pinch" of the right hand — where the base of the thumb meets the base of the index finger, roughly an inch above the index knuckle. Double-check this one.

Measure from the end of the left shoulder to the pinch of the left hand. Arms are rarely identical — measure this one separately rather than copying the right.

Bicep

Measure around the fullest part of the bicep with the arm relaxed by your side. One side is enough.

Measure around the fullest part of the wrist, where the cuff will close. One side is enough.

Measure around the fullest part of the waist and stomach, or just below the bottom ribs — whichever is larger. Relax. Do not hold your stomach in.

Front jacket length

Measure straight down the front from the base of the neck (either side) to the point where you want the jacket to end. This is the single measurement that is a preference rather than a fact — if in doubt, measure a jacket you like the length of.

With arms by your side, measure across the front of the chest: start at the front of the right armpit, across the nipples, stop at the front of the left armpit. Do not measure under the arms. This is the front half of the full chest.

Measure around the natural waistline — usually the narrowest part of the torso, where the waistband should sit. Do not pull tight.

Measure from the crotch straight down the inside of the leg to the ankle. Easiest with a well-fitting pair of pants laid flat as a reference.
